The evening is a time to honor our members, our partners, and equally important – the families that support your firefighters. Several awards are presented during the evening.

Many years ago, the Leadership Award was developed. Lieutenant Moeller was the first recipient of this award. This year, for the first time, the award was presented to an individual who is not an officer – proving that leadership is earned, not just given by rank.

The recipient of this year’s Leadership Award has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, coordination and leadership both on his shift and in his role as the Fleet Program Manager.

Engineer Mike Dreger has taken ownership and developed pride in the fleet program, and it is evident by the quality and reliability of our apparatus and equipment. Mike and his team pride themselves on the quality of our maintenance program. This is evident in their professional certifications; Mike has obtained the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications for:

• EVT: Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Ambulances
• EVT: Ambulance Electrical Systems
• EVT: Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Fire Apparatus
• EVT: Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
• Bendix diagnostic and repair of anti-lock braking systems, electronic roll stability and air disc brakes
• ASE: Refrigerant recovery & recycling

The amount of time and effort that Mike spends on fleet management is extraordinary; many do not realize the amount of work necessary to provide and maintain a quality fleet.

As an Engineer, Mike is exceptional. The last fire a few weeks ago, he managed to perform, and report back a 360, secure utilities, deploy a hose line, and support operations. Mike is the whole package.

On shift, Mike is a solid, steady presence. He assists his Lieutenant, Lieutenant Moeller, and crew throughout the shift, and takes the time to mentor new firefighters and engineers. Lieutenant Moeller spoke about the impact that Mike has had on his shift.
